How it Works

Our ScaleStop Plus water filtration systems do not require chemicals such as sodium, potassium, acids or phosphates to produce a scale free effect in water distributions systems and especially water heating equipment. Instead, they use a smarter, physical water treatment that does not extract or sequester the water hardness constituents of calcium and magnesium, but rather consistently influences the crystal structures of these minerals in such a manner that no scale is formed on interior surfaces.

Our ScaleStop Plus water filtration systems do not add chemicals to the water. To be more specific, rather than attempting to prevent the natural tendency of hard water to form scale (by removing or adding chemicals), ScaleStop Plus® treatment actually promotes and redirects scale formation in such a manner that the scale remains suspended in the water rather than forming on surfaces within the water system.

Three-Stage Filtration Removes Hazardous Chemicals and Metals, Harmful Microorganisms, and Prevents Hard Water Scale

ScaleStop Plus TurboTAC combines three specialized filter media to prevent hard water scale and remove metals and chlorine.

In cold water, calcium ions (Ca+2), magnesium ions (Mg+2) and bicarbonate ions (HCO3-) are surrounded by layers of electrochemically-attracted water molecules, which insulate against the natural tendency of the oppositely-charged ions to come together and form crystals. Atomic level templates on the surface of the ScaleStop Plus polymeric beads act as catalysts and reduce the ability of water molecules to prevent calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate ions from coming together to form crystals of calcium and magnesium scale.

This process, referred to as Template Assisted Crystallization (TAC), results in the creation of microscopic crystals of scale (seed crystals) which rapidly form in the treated water, not on the contact surfaces of the water system, and are carried downstream in colloidal suspension through the water system.

ScaleStop Plus water filtration systems use a highly specialized media consisting of polymeric beads which serve as a powerful catalyst for the formation of nano-crystals of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate that remain suspended in solution instead of forming hard mineral scale on surfaces.

This process is called Template Assisted Crystallization or TAC, (sometimes referred to as Nucleation Assisted Crystallization or NAC) and is widely becoming the most respected form of alternative hard water treatment.

The nucleation sites on the TAC media attract calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate ions. At these template sites, these building blocks of mineral scale combine to form microscopic (nanometer-sized) calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate crystals. However, instead of forming typical calcite crystals (normal mineral scale), the template surface guides the formation of a crystal structure that does not stick to surfaces. As the crystals grow, they break off and become suspended in the water stream and are carried away in a crystal form that is stable, and does not easily revert back to its dissolved form or stick to surfaces.

Step 1: Capture of Hard Water Minerals

Atomic level nucleation sites on the surface of very small specially-treated polymer beads attract dissolved hard water minerals — calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate ions — which combine to form microscopic (nanometer-sized) calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate crystals.

Step 2: Isolation of Hard Water Minerals

Once the calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate crystals grow to a certain size, they are released from the polymer beads and suspended in the water stream and are carried away in a crystal form that is stable, and does not easily revert back to its dissolved form or stick to surfaces. The crystals are relatively insoluble, effectively isolating the calcium carbonate (CaCO3) that forms hard water scale from the water and anything the water contacts.
